Concerns around waste disposal and recycling have taken over the nation this year and various new legislation have been passed to ensure this epidemic is controlled including the banning of plastic straws. There have been many award winning documentaries, such as blue planet, warning us of the impact of improper waste disposal on the planet and the need for more meticulous recycling.  Surry council has been putting some measures into to place to confirm they are part of this movement to ensure a cleaner and healthier environment for all.

According to planning documents a proposed recycling centre in West Byfleet could reach 13-meters in height and accept nearly 100 waste deliveries a day. Plans submitted by Oaktree Environmental Ltd to Runnymede Borough Council Units 11 and 12 in Wintersells Business Park would be converted to make space for a new state-of-the-art waste recycling plant.

In a planning statement, Oaktree Environmental said the expanded site would help achieve “national recycling targets”, and create 21 full time jobs and the recycling plant would be in keeping with the sites industrial surroundings.

The developer has estimated that a maximum of 300 tonnes of non-hazardous mixed waste would be imported to the site everyday. The bulk of this waste would come from household, industrial, demolition and excavation and commercial and construction sources. Using a new picking line, a loading shovel and a 360-degree excavator the different types of waste will be easily separated.

When the plant is up and running there are also plans to hold daily inspections to ensure litter and other waste does no escape the site and that any found outside will be recovered. The site will be open to accept waste from 6.30 am to 6 pm from Monday to Friday and it is estimated that there could be as many as 100 vehicles let into the site on any working day, however the site will retain an existing two-storey office building on the north-east part of the site.
