The Monkey Puzzle Nursery in Weybridge recieved a visit from the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Phillip Hammond as he presented the nursery with the Millie’s Mark Award.

The Millie’s Mark Award is named after nine-month old Millie Thompson who tragically died after choking on her own food. The parents of Millie set this trust up in order to improve the standards of first aid amongst child carers, to help prevent similar tragedies from happening again.

The requirement from nurseries across the country is to have just one person with a current paediatric first aid certificate at the premises and available at all time, according to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). But only when all of the staff that work with children are fully trained in first aid can the Millie’s Mark award be given, so it is a real achievement from the Monkey Puzzle Nursery.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer was there to unveil a plaque marking the achievement and he spoke with nursery staff and also watched a presentation delivered by the children. He commented on his visit stating, “It’s a great pleasure to be here today to unveil this award for Millie’s Mark to Monkey Puzzle Nursery Weybridge.

“It’s the only nursery in Weybridge or indeed in the surrounding area that has been awarded this.”

Us here at Dakota are delighted to know that the highest standards in education and welfare are achieved in the region of Weybridge, just around the corner from us and we commend and salute the staff that work so hard!

The owner of the nursery, Nikki McReynolds, explained why the award means so much and how parents can feel truly assured when leaving their children for the day, “Millie’s Mark has raised the bar so high that everyone has to be first aid trained at the nursery,” she said.

“What that means for us is that everyone is confident, ready and able to deal with an emergency situation…It is very reassuring for our parents to know that we have achieved this outstanding accreditation and their children are in safe hands.”

A very big round of applause from all of us at Dakota!
